Chapter Nine

* * *

“What crawled up your ass?”

Garrett was ready to tell Jared to shut the fuck up, but then thought better of it when they had a seat, each drinking a Styrofoam cup full of coffee. “I just don’t like my private life invaded.”

“Then you picked the wrong fucking business to be in, buddy. Seriously, what the fuck is going on here?”

“It’s been a long-ass day.”

Jared wasn’t going to let him off easy. “It’s not been an easy day for any of us. Do you think I like seeing you worried? Do you think I like seeing Shell worried? Hell, I love Hannah too. She brings out the best in you. Don’t run away from this. What is with the two of you?”

“I don’t want people in my business, and it really pisses me the fuck off when those people can post a picture of the woman that I love and make her feel like a piece of shit. I’m worried that I’m going to go to jail for breaking one of those asshole’s noses.”

“It wouldn’t be the first time you went to jail,” Jared laughed. “We’ve both been there. Just because we’ve both mellowed out doesn’t mean we’re complete pussies.”

“It’s scary,” Garrett started. “To have someone count on you. And I know that I invited her here, I know I invited her into my life, but today I had a fleeting thought that what if she was out of it. What if something happened to us? Or even just to her? How would I move on? I’ve put myself in that situation where my happiness is wrapped up in one person.”

“Welcome to love, man. It’s what happens. It doesn’t mean we run from it,” Jared took a drink of his coffee and looked his friend in the eye. “We’re growing up, we’re getting older. As much as it kills me to tell you this, you were right a few months ago when you said you were lonely. I was too. I didn’t realize how sad I was, how much I needed a person with me who knew me. That vacation I took with Shell? It opened up to my eyes to a whole new world. I’m telling you this right now—you throw it away, you’re never going to get back what the two of you have.”

Garrett nodded his head, knowing that what Jared was saying was true. It was so difficult for him to open his life up to all of this, but he knew the positives far outweighed the negatives. It was shock that he was going through. He could have lost her, and his life was in the midst of such a huge change. Before whenever there was such a large change, he would leave; he would go off, get drunk, and burn off some steam. As much as it killed him, Jared was right. They were growing up, things were changing in their lives. It was time for all of them to stop being stupid.

“You’re right, she brings things to the table like that, but then again so do I.
